Sarah Doolin Roy was raised in a family where civic leadership and the arts were deeply intertwined. Her father served as Director of Cultural Affairs for the State of Florida. Her mother held the top unelected leadership role in the Leon County Property Appraiser’s Office, while also appearing as a featured dancer on WFSU’s nationally syndicated PBS fitness program Body Electric.

Public institutions, and the responsibility to strengthen them, were part of daily life.

The arts ran even deeper in the family lineage.

Her grandfather, Dr. Howard A. Doolin, who was known throughout Florida education circles simply as “The Maestro,” served as Music Superintendent for Miami-Dade County Public Schools for decades. A transformative advocate for arts education, he helped make music instruction a foundational part of public education, believing the arts gave children “a uniquely valuable mode of seeing ourselves and the world around us.” In 1996, he was inducted into the National Music Educators Hall of Fame alongside Leonard Bernstein.

Commitment to the arts and the responsibility to steward public institutions have echoed quietly through Roy’s own life. She attended Trinity Catholic School and Maclay School, and spent afternoons at Young Actors Theatre, founded by her aunt Tina Williams, and at The Tallahassee Ballet, where she developed an early foundation in the performing arts.

Ballet became her primary language, and Roy emerged as one of the Company’s standout young dancers. In her teens, she performed principal roles including Clara and Dew Drop in The Nutcracker and Swanhilda in Coppélia, spent summers studying at Boston Ballet and Sarasota Ballet, and traveled abroad on a cultural exchange partnership between The Tallahassee Ballet and the Irish National Youth Ballet. This early international experience foreshadowed the global dimension of her later career.

“Even as a young dancer, Sarah possessed an innate combination of discipline and artistry. She dedicated herself seriously to the work, but never lost her warmth, humor, or joy on stage. She had a natural presence — a bright smile, an ability to connect with audiences, and the kind of confidence that draws people in,” says Joyce Fausone, former Artistic Director of The Tallahassee Ballet.

Roy was immersed in an environment where excellence was expected and composure under pressure was essential. “Ballet creates a peak-performance mindset,” she says. “You learn grit with grace, that success is born from consistency and practice, and how to storytell through the body and connect with others. And most useful: how to make something incredibly difficult look effortless and joyful.”

Those early experiences forged the foundational pillars of her leadership style: discipline without rigidity, ambition without ego, and the ability to remain calm under extraordinary pressure.
